Makanalani Kids February 2023 Newsletter

Rain, rain, go away! February was absolutely filled with rainy days, we're ready for some sunshine! Despite the dreary weather, our groups used the rain to their advantage to have some fun!

Surfs Up!

Stick some local kids near a small body of water and they’ll always find a way to surf it! During their stay, Kauai Christian Fellowship youth made our rushing stream and slip n’ slide their own personal paradise by using surf boards, boogie boards, and all the floaties to take the slide to the next level! We know rain can be a bit of a bummer, but leave it to the kids to make lemonade out of lemons!

Captivating Core and Wild at Heart

captivating core

For the last 4 years we’ve had the pleasure of hosting an amazing women’s retreat called Captivating Core. Women from all over the island (and sometimes the mainland!) come to this retreat to learn about God’s design for a woman’s heart, be pampered, eat amazing food, and take a little break from everyday life. All the women who have attended in the past have been so blessed by it that they wanted their husbands to attend the men’s version, Wild at Heart! So for the last 2 years, Wild at Heart has been hosting their own retreat at Makanalani and it has been such a blessing to witness all sorts of men come in and be transformed during their time here. Every year they open up a few spots for our interns to attend both retreats, free of charge, and they always come back refreshed and full of new knowledge to share with the group. We are thankful to play a part in this retreat every year!

Luau Time!

Here in Hawai’i, it is a tradition to throw a huge 1st birthday party for every kiddo. This age old tradition started because it was once a very big deal for kids to make it to their first birthday, so when they would, they would gather the whole family and community to celebrate this major achievement! These luau’s are marked with tons of amazing local food, lots of attendees, and of course, music! Our interns had the opportunity to attend the birthday luau of our farm manager Kimo’s granddaughter. They had so much fun trying new food and being immersed in some local Hawaiian culture!

Pasture Clean Up

Because of the crazy heavy rain we’ve been getting, our pastures were a muddy mess. Thankfully our interns came to the rescue and were able to replenish the fields with some nutrients and tidy things up a bit. Our sheep are happy campers with their new fields!

Finally, Some Progress!

manager house progress

If you’ve been here awhile, you may remember that we are in the process of building a manager’s house to house some of our executive team. We waiting a long time to get this on the ground and now it feels like we are finally making good progress! Of course, the rain has stalled our plans a bit, but we are so excited to see some resemblance of a building now! The garage/barn is fully roofed and waterproof and we’re hoping by the next newsletter that our main house will also have a roof of its own. We just need that sun to come back out again!

That’s all for now! We are so very thankful for all your support and continued generosity. We would not be here without you! If you feel led to give or want to find out about how you can get involved click here.
