Last week was an exciting week for Makanalani and Coconut Marketplace!! JoJo’s Shave Ice had it’s soft opening! Now that another location is up and running, more profits can be made to send more kiddos to camp for FREE. JoJo’s is such an energetic environment. Everything, including the shave ice and employees, are so vibrant! The interns and locals are blessed to be able to work there and we enjoy giving not only visitors, but other locals, a tasty treat! Enjoy these photos of the JoJo’s aesthetic and our first customers!
Last week Chicken in a Barrel in Coconut Marketplace had it’s soft opening along with JoJo’s! This is another one of Makanalani’s partnering businesses, and we are super stoked to see this restaurant flourish on the island!! Enjoy the photos below of some of the Taylors and staff, how food is prepped, and of our first customer!!
This week’s intern of the week is Megan! Megan is another member of our Alaka’i. She has been coming to Kauai for family vacations since she was a little girl, and a little over a year ago the Lord was calling her to move here! With patience, she waited for an opportunity to present itself and she served during the Summer session, absolutely loved it, and returned for the Fall Serve Session.
1. Can you give a brief summary about how you found out about the internship?
“My pastor was teaching a college course on the island and ended up staying at Makanalani. Eric and Lyn told him about the internship, and I had been called to move to Kauai a little over a year ago, so my pastor sent me the link to apply, I prayed about the decision, and applied for the Summer session and stayed to continue during the Fall session.”
2. What has God been teaching you since you’ve arrived?
“Since I arrived last May the Lord has been teaching me so much about relying on Him in every way and not worrying about what’s to come. Since I came back this Fall He’s been teaching me more about leadership and what that looks like in light of relying on Him and not stressing.”
3. What has been one of your favorite things so far about the internship and the island?
“My favorite part about this internship has been the space it gives you to grow closer to the Lord and learn things that you wouldn’t anywhere else. My favorite thing about this island is everything honestly. The culture, history, nature, weather, beaches, and the community.”
4. What has been the most challenging but rewarding?
“The most challenging but rewarding part so far has been finding my place on the island while living in the community of the internship. I’ve been so completely blessed with my Ohana here, and I also love my community outside the internship. Dividing my time has been somewhat difficult.”
5. What would be your advice to someone interested in applying?
“My advice to someone interested in applying is to PRAY! I can’t say this internship is for everyone, but if you feel the Lord is putting this on your heart please apply!”
