Last Week at a Glance… Sheepin’, Interns of The Week, & Restaurant Progress

We interns are being introduced to new tasks every week. This week we got to witness and be part of shepherding. It was an awesome opportunity for us to connect our experience to the Bible in such a real way. Our great Shepherd is patient, loving, and caring towards His sheep, and we also practiced patience, love, and care towards the sheep of Makanalani. I can’t forget to spotlight the cutest sheep dogs ever! They’re so smart, sweet, and helpful.

Each week we would like to introduce you to one of our interns! This week we decided to feature Matt & Derek together! A dynamic duo that not only knew each other before interning at Makanalani, but that also share a love of the Lord, the arts, & serving.

1. Can you give us a brief summary about your friendship and how you both decided to do this internship?
D: “I’ve known Matt for quite some time, but got to know him really well as his youth leader about 4 years ago. He told me about the internship just a few weeks before it started, I felt led to go, & here we are!”

M: “Derek was my small group leader in high school and we have been great buds since! I found out about the internship from a friend back home in Washington and had Derek jump on board with me!”

2. What has God been teaching you since you’ve arrived?
D: “God has been showing me how to be more simple. I’m learning not to overcomplicate things and trust that He will provide.”

M: “God has been teaching and reminding me that whatever situation I am in I need to rely on Him to provide and trust that He has a greater plan.”

3. What has been one of your favorite things so far about the internship and the island?
D: “I’ve loved seeing God’s beautiful creation! This island is beyond beautiful and all of the locals and interns have been great so far!”

M: “My favorite thing so far has been the beautiful chickens. They are the funniest, coolest things ever!”

4. What has been the most challenging?
D: “The most challenging part so far has been being away from my family and my pup, but this community is so welcoming and has made the transition a lot easier.”

M: “The most challenging part has been being away from my beautiful fiancé and family. This season of coming to Hawaii is such a good thing for me though, I’m stoked to be here.”

5. What would be your advice to someone who is interested in applying?
D: “DO IT!!! Get out of your comfort zone. Who wouldn’t want to seek God and be in Hawaii while doing it!”

M: “Pray on it and ask yourself if it is a place God wants to take you and grow you.”

We’re making excellent progress on our new Chicken in a Barrel BBQ location! We are just about 2-3 weeks away from opening! We’re wrapping up construction on site, the barrels are placed right where we want them, and the overhead surfboards put a nice touch on our island restaurant. Our last phase will be getting through various department inspections and then we will be open for business!!

These local businesses are such a spotlight. Their profits go towards keeping Makanalani free and open for the kiddos. We are so grateful!
