Come join in the fun on Saturday, October 7th, from 10 am to 4 pm as we celebrate Makahiki season and honor Kauai’s beloved King Kaumuali’i. Makahiki season is an ancient Hawaiian New Years Festival that spans four months from October or November through February or March.
This time of year was traditionally used for celebrating the bounty of the land, so it’s also very much like a Harvest Festival. Peace and prosperity prevailed during this time of celebration with the summer over, people stopped work to enjoy feasts, hula, and canoeing events, renew family bonds and honor their aliʻi or chief. And all war and battles were stopped to ensure the growth of the new crops.
Nowadays we can celebrate Kauai style at the Old Waimea Sugar Mill and enjoy live music, hula, crafts both for purchase and make-it/take-it, local food, a silent auction.
