Giving Our Keiki the Best Start to the School Year

As you may or may not know, the school summer holidays are upon us. And inevitably this glorious never ending time (or at least that’s how it feels to our children) is drawing to a close. Back to school ads are popping up, reminders to buy supplies and lists of what’s needed are carefully considered and that’s where help is needed.

To put it simply, many of our island keiki start the school year without all the supplies they need. And that isn’t conducive to good learning: not just being without the correct tools, but also the stress that it brings to them and their families.

And here’s how you can help. The good folks down at St. Michael and All Angels are collecting the school supplies that are most frequently requested for elementary and middle schools at all grade levels for distribution. The most wanted items are: backpacks, Crayola crayons (24 count), disinfecting wipes, large erasers, glue – Elmer’s – all 4 oz., headphones for computer lab, markers – dry erase, Expo, paper towel roll, pencils (#2 with eraser, sharpened), scissors (Fiskar brand), tablets – Marble composition.

If you can help there will be a collection box in the back of the church for you to leave these items in. Additionally Wal-Mart has lists of desired school supplies for every school, and for every grade level.

Let us remember what the Bible says about charity: Acts 20:35
“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ “
