Do you know what Banana Poka is? It’s actually a species of passionfruit. The yellow edible fruits are what has given it the name Banana Passionfruit in some countries but here in Hawaii this high climbing vine is considered an invasive species and one that you can help remove.
This family friendly forest education fair has it all: collect invasive vines and learn to make baskets from them, enjoy music from great musicians, and learn all about Koke’e from the State Park agencies and organizations that take care of Koke‘e State Park with their exhibits. There will also be games for keiki, flower arranging, a crowing contest, lei making, snacks and a silent auction.
The Annual Banana Poka Round Up is held in Koke’e State Park every year and this year is their 27th! You can join in the family fun on Sunday, May 28th from 9:00 am. This year the event moves from the Stone Pavilion at Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow to the historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp operated by Hui o Laka. Parking will be at the Stone Pavilion (including handicap parking stalls) and Camp area. A shuttle will be provided for those not able to walk up the hill next to the Koke’e Lodge to the camp. Pickups will be at the stone pavilion and the Koke’e Natural History Museum.
