Head Start on Kauai

Early education is so important for setting children on the right path to adulthood. One of the long-standing & most effective programs for this is head start, but too few people know about it.

If you have pre-school youngsters or have friends who do, you may want to let them know about the many programs on Kauai — they even do home visits & care for expectant mothers, so get those keiki off to a good start with head start.

Here are the locations, rights & expectations of the program:

ELIGIBILITY:
Head Start originated in 1965 to provide free comprehensive child education and family services to income and age eligible children and their families in collaboration with other community organization.

Head Start helps all children succeed, including children with severe special needs.

Income eligible families with children ages 3 and 4 years old should apply.

As a participant in a Child & Family Service program you have the following rights:

  • The right to a humane service environment
  • The right to services free from unlawful discrimination
  • The right to be involved in your own service planning
  • The right to confidentiality except when otherwise mandated by law
  • The right to services which are least restrictive and most convenient
  • The right to file a complaint if these rights are infringed

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Accept the program as an opportunity to improve you, your child’s and your family’s lives
  • Complete all health and other requirements on time
  • Participate as a volunteer, working cooperatively with staff and other parents, in the classroom and on committees
  • Welcome staff into your home for home visits, as appropriate
  • Advocate for improved community services
