October 2025 Newsletter – Makanalani Kids

Fall Break has come and gone! The weather is cooling off, and more rain has been on the horizon.
October has been a fantastic month for Makanalani Kids. Please join us as we share about this month!

- Fall Break 2025 -

Fall Break 2025 was a great success! Welcoming in three different groups and bringing in students from all across Kauai for a fun week of camp. Primarily hosted through Kauai’s Missionary Churches and Kauai Christian Fellowship kids ministry, kids were provided a fun and safe experience to take in God’s beautiful creation and spend time making incredible memories with their friends!

- All Roads Lead to the Slip and Slide -

The Makanalani Slip and Slide got a lot of use over Fall Break! With every camp getting good use of it in the rain and shine. The kids always have such a fun time as they race each other, try to stay linked with their friends, or surf down on a bodyboard! Through all the soap and mud, the smiles shine through all the more!

- Competition Time -

During the Fall Break visit for Lihue and Koloa Missionary Church Youth Groups, they hosted some friendly competition between their students! The morning challenges were girls vs. boys. Competing in multiple minigames from memory challenges, trivia, throwing challenges, Simon Says, rock, paper, scissors, and more! The guys were off to an early lead, but by the end the girls took the lead and ended with the win! All had a blast and were good sports through it all!

- A Night of Worship -

This month we had the opportunity to host a young adult worship night! Hosted by our own Hawaii Leadership Residency and attended by over 100 young adults from all over Kauai, it was an amazing night of revival, community, and singing praises to God! It was an incredible opportunity to connect Hawaii Leadership Residency, Calvary Bible Institute, Anchor House Bible School, House Church, and many other Kauai residents representing many different churches!

A Piece of Makanalani History
- The Cottage -

The Cottage was built for two main reasons.  Firstly, we had not designed or built anything like this before and so we needed to test some building materials and methods on a small scale before moving on to building and making less mistakes at the huge Kids House.   Secondly, we needed a workplace where we could test new farm products (like jams, and lamb sausage!) and our little cottage proved perfect for that.

The design of the Cottage was intended to reflect the island’s traditional plantation style, creating the feel of old Hawaii.  We chose a quiet site, far from the Barn and hidden away, and we also planned a beautiful pond or swimming hole.

We started the Cottage while still building the Barn, working the Cottage site and its exterior during good weather and the Barn interior on rainy days.

Continuing through Fall 2025!

“Aloha friends,

We’re a little over halfway through the HLR Fall Session and I’m full of gratitude. Over the last weeks we’ve walked through the Scriptures, explored the person and work of the Holy Spirit, leaned into devotion through prayer, and worked through discipleship and spiritual formation in our teaching blocks. Next up we’re ready to launch into calling/assignment, leadership, and evangelism, equipping the residents to leave here with clarity about how God is calling them and how to lead others well.

Helping at Makanalani on the farm is exactly the kind of work that forms people – the crew have been “pushing back the bush” by removing invasive trees so native plants can breathe again, weedeating and clearing debris, and stewarding the land so the camps that come through Makanalani have an incredible experience of relishing God’s beauty. Serving at the Kids House has been a blast! We’ve assisted in keeping the house in shape and the residents have leapt into Fall Break camp rhythms, serving kids from all over the island. It’s a joy to see how time on the farm and tending the house flow together: the work of our hands makes space for the laughter and learning of the children we serve. We love the fact that we get to serve both face-to-face and behind the scenes- we get to see the fruit of our labor, and we get to learn the true joy of serving the Lord and not for man’s approval.

Someone I want to highlight this season: Tristan- he met us at church while visiting the island over the summer, committed himself to following Christ, and then moved to Kaua’i to pursue time with HLR. He’s been so reliable on the farm and kid’s service, is pressing into all we are learning, and we have the unbelievable privilege of baptizing him next week! It’s moments of growth and transformation like this that make leading this residency such a “gift of Heaven.” I’m so encouraged and full of love for each one of our residents.

We invite you to pray with us as we head toward the second half of this session- for perseverance to finish strong on the farm and at the Kids House, nd for hearts to be further turned toward Jesus.”
