We all know the story of Jonah and the whale and how he sat in the belly of a whale for three days praying to God praising Him and repenting for disobeying God’s order to preach to Nineveh. Well how do you think Jonah would cope with sitting inside a whale these days?
We can’t imagine it was a very nice place to spend time in the first place, and nowadays as we hear tales of whales accidentally eating the rubbish that’s in our oceans we can only imagine that it would be a lot more crowded for poor Jonah if he were to experience it now.
‘Genesis 1:26-28
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.’
But to do this we have to make sure that our oceans are a fit home for all, and that means not polluting them. God gave us this beautiful world to replenish, and littering it is littering God’s creation. We can learn more about whales and what affects them and what needs they have – for example did you know that whales have their own complex language and stay together in family groups? At an upcoming event at Princeville Library.
On Wednesday, February 6th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm you can see NOAA’s life-size inflatable whale! And learn all about whales: the great migration journeys they take, the danger marine debris poses to them and much more, all while seeing just how big this marvelous creation of God’s is.
