Garden Movie Showing sets stage for new release
The dinosaurs will be back at the National Tropical Botanical Garden during “Movie Night in McBryde Garden.” On Friday, June 5, the public is invited in to a showing of the original blockbuster film “Jurassic Park” and the famous locations in Allerton Garden that were featured in it before watching the movie under the stars in the adjacent McBryde Garden.
Kama‘aina and visitors will recognize key shooting locations, including one of the most famous — the “Jurassic Trees” in the Allerton Garden — which movie-goers will see in person during a pre-show guided walk, as well as other places in Allerton that Steven Spielberg used when he filmed there in 1992.
In addition to the walk, pre-show activities include deejay music, face painting, and kids activities in the McBryde Garden Piko. Guests will be shuttled into the gardens from the South Shore Visitors Center on Lāwa‘i Road in Po‘ipū, across from Spouting Horn, from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. The film will begin at sundown, approximately 7:30 p.m., with shuttles back to the Visitors Center at 9:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or compact beach/camping chairs. Paradise Grinds will be on hand to sell food, shave ice, and popcorn.
The event, to be held the weekend before the new release “Jurassic World” hits theaters, will bring back fun memories for those who cheered the scrolling credit “Filmed on Kaua‘i” when they first saw the movie. “We are so excited to invite the Kaua‘i community and visitors into the gardens for this event,” said Andy Jasper, Director of the South Shore Gardens. “Helping life find a way is a central theme in the original Jurassic Park plot and fundamental to NTBG’s mission as well. Showing the movie in the Garden is an exciting way for us to engage with the community and invite them into our world,” Jasper continued. A free bag of popcorn will be given to those presenting their Garden membership card or anyone who wears a “Jurassic Park – Filmed on Kaua‘i” t-shirt that were available when the film premiered on the island. The original 1993 movie sets the stage for the June 12 release.
The Garden is asking for a suggested donation of $10 for entry. National Tropical Botanical Garden (www.ntbg.org) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental institution with the mission is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions. NTBG is supported primarily through donations and grants.
