Experience Traditional Japanese Puppetry

One of the many blessings of living here is the opportunity to experience things from so many different cultures as Hawaii truly is a ‘melting pot’ of many different peoples. With that in mind we are indeed blessed to have the chance to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with a master Japanese artist.

On Monday, September 18th, starting at 5:30 pm in Lihue Library you can meet Koryu Nishikawa V, a 5th generation Master Puppeteer of the Kuruma Ningyō style. Who will be giving a Free workshop in Traditional Japanese Puppetry.

Kuruma Ningyō is a 160-year-old form of puppetry in which a puppet is operated by a single puppeteer sitting on a small wheeled cart, he uses his hands and feet to operate the puppet while wheeling himself around the stage.

The workshop will also give participants the opportunity to handle the traditional Japanese puppets and find out how these beautiful puppets are brought to life. This is a free event that’s suitable for all ages, although they do ask that younger children are accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
