Kaumuali’i – Kauai’s Last King

Kauai is rich with history and we are blessed in so many ways living here, not only do we live in what might arguably be one of God’s most beautiful creations but it is also full of wise and knowledgable people (kupuna) who strive to keep the history alive and well, so that we might all learn and benefit from it.

One of those such organizations is Kauai Historical Society who put on many events throughout the year and who are dedicated to collecting and preserving our rich history and providing the means for the public to enjoy and learn about Kauai and Ni’ihau.

Kaumuali’i was Kauai’s last king and the last independent king (aliʻi nui – which means supreme ruler) before becoming a vessel of King Kamehameha I in 1810. The history of the islands and our last king are fascinating and we are grateful to have the chance to learn more. On Thursday, September 14th, starting at 6 pm you have the chance to do just that as Kauai Historical Society are having a Talk Story on Kaumuali‘i – Kauai’s Last King with West Kaua’i storyteller, Auntie Aletha Kaʻohi.

Not only will you get to hear about the life and times of King Kaumuali’i, but also his legacy and more recent community events to memorialize him, such as raising a statue to his honor and celebrating him in a festival each October. The Talk Story will be held at the Regency at Puakea, 2120 Kaneka St, Lihue. And it’s free for all to attend!
